Wauconda man in custody after 2-hour standoff with police

A Wauconda man is in police custody after a two-hour standoff that started when he barricaded himself in his house, police said.

Officers responded to the residence on the 600 block of Larkdale Row at 9:09 a.m. Friday for a report of a man in mental health crisis who threatened to grab a gun and shoot neighbors, according to a police department news release.

Witnesses said the man was sitting in front of the house holding an object while shouting and threatening neighbors, police said.

Police said when they arrived, the man continued threatening that he was going to retrieve a gun and shoot his neighbors.

As officers tried to detain him, he slammed the door, which struck one of the officers in the side, police said.

Two hours after the standoff began, police from Wauconda, Island Lake and Lake Zurich forced entry into the house and took the man into custody without incident.

He was taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation. Police said charges are pending.
