Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band to perform annual spring concert May 5

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band (BGSB) will perform its 23rd annual spring concert oat 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at the Stevenson High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire. The concert, “We’ve got RHYTHM,” will feature music from around the world exploring the use of rhythm in various genres.

The performance will showcase rhythms found in everything from the Broadway stage to ballet, as well as folk and dance tunes from Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Selections include Borodin's “Polovtsian Dances,” excerpts from the last movement of Mahler's “Third Symphony,” exotic rhythms from Alfred Reed's “Armenian Dances,” Bernstein's “Mambo” from “West Side Story,” the “naughty” rhythms of the “Can-Can” from France and the flashy, fast and furious rhythms of the Cuban dance clubs in “Havana Nights.” In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, the band will also feature the ever-popular “Danzon No. 2” of Arturo Marquez and the “Huapango” of Moncayo.

“This performance will explore the many and diverse uses of rhythm found in music throughout the ages in many cultures and musical formats,” said BGSB Director Howard Green. “We will show how the use of rhythm contributes to our enjoyment and understanding of music and culture, along with melody, harmony and instrumentation.”

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band, one of the premier community bands in Northern Illinois, and now in its 23rd year, is a program of the village of Buffalo Grove, its founding Music Director Howard Green and Associate Conductor Allison Rakickas.

Ticket prices for adults are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Seniors (55 and older) and students with ID are $8. Veterans and current military service personnel are free at the door with ID.
