Northbrook’s TPAC waiving fees April 23 to 30 in honor of Earth Month

In honor of Earth Month, the Northbrook Park District’s Techny Prairie Activity Center is waiving enrollment and membership fees for new members from April 23 through April 30.

Additionally, current TPAC members ages 15 and up can bring in a guest for free all week. (All guests under 18 must have a waiver signed by a legal guardian).

TPAC was built with a focus on stewardship of natural resources. Thanks to its 833 solar panels, it produces net-zero energy — meaning, the total amount of annual energy generated with solar panels is equal or greater than the amount of energy used by the building.

“One of the core tenets of the Northbrook Park District’s mission is to enhance the community through environmental stewardship, and there is no better example than TPAC,” TPAC Manager Shawn Bernaky said. “In that spirit, we wanted to honor Earth Month, and Earth Day on April 22, by offering these specials to new and current members.”

April 22 marks the 24th anniversary of Earth Day. The impetus for a day devoted to celebrating our planet and protecting it from environmental pollution came from U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a Democrat. Nelson had the idea of holding a teach-in on college campuses and persuaded U.S. Rep. Pete McCloskey, a Republican, to join him in the effort, according to earthday.org.

The event became known as Earth Day after activist Dennis Hayes was given the reins to build a national staff and involve a variety of organizations, faith groups and more. April 22 was picked because, as a weekday between spring break and exams, it would maximize student involvement, according to the website.

To take advantage of TPAC’s zero-fee specials during Earth Month, visit nbfitness.org, stop by the front desk at 180 Anets Drive in Northbrook, or call customer service at (847) 897-6180.

Typically, TPAC enrollment fees are $75 for adults and $45 for seniors and those under 18 years of age. Monthly membership fees for residents are $59 for adults, $45 for seniors, $39 for ages 12-17 and $29 for ages 11 and 12. Monthly membership fees for nonresidents are $74 for adults, $56 for seniors, $49 for ages 12-17 and $36 for ages 11 and 12.

Established in 1927, the mission of the Northbrook Park District is to enhance the community by providing outstanding services, parks and facilities through environmental, social and financial stewardship.
