Man gets 20 years for sexually abusing child

A Woodstock man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting and abusing a child.

In November, a Kane County jury found Steven T. Grimmitt, 57, of the 2900 block of Castle Road, guilty of three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and 13 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

However, Judge John Barsanti in March overruled the jury on one of the predatory assault counts and six of the abuse counts, declaring Grimmitt not guilty.

Barsanti sentenced Grimmitt on April 3.

Between May 2012 and April 2014, prosecutors said, Grimmitt sexually abused two victims, whom he knew. Both were younger than 13.

The Kane County Child Advocacy Center and the Pingree Grove Police Department investigated the case.

Grimmitt must serve at least 15 years before being eligible for parole. He has to register for life as a sexual offender.
