Two seriously hurt in head-on crash in Island Lake

Two people were trapped in their vehicles and seriously injured after a head-on crash Thursday morning in Island Lake.

Police were called about 7:09 a.m. to Route 176 east of Williams Park Road for a two-vehicle crash with entrapment, according to police Chief Jennifer Paulus.

A 26-year-old man driving a 1996 Honda was traveling west on Route 176 when a witness said he suddenly veered into eastbound traffic for an unknown reason, causing an offset head-on collision with an eastbound 2018 Nissan driven by a 59-year-old Wauconda woman, Paulus said.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and both drivers had to be extricated, she added.

There were no passengers in either vehicle. Route 176 was shut down between Darrell Road and Mack Drive for about an hour.

The drivers were not identified as the investigation continues. Both were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries, Paulus said.

Their status was not known Thursday afternoon. No charges have been filed, she added.
