Advocate Lutheran General Hospital achieves fifth Magnet recognition in nursing

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge recently attained its fifth Magnet recognition, a testament to its dedication to high-quality nursing practice, officials said.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This credential is the highest honor and gold standard for professional nursing practice and excellence.

Advocate Lutheran General belongs to a global community of Magnet-recognized organizations. Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the U.S. have achieved Magnet recognition, and only 1% have been Magnet-designated five times.

“Magnet recognition is a tremendous honor and reflects our commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to our patients and communities,” said Mary Roesch, interim chief nursing officer at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. “Our achievement of this credential underscores the foundation of excellence and values that drive our nurses and teammates every day.”

Research demonstrates Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:

• Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information

• Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates

• Higher job satisfaction among nurses

• Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions

Advocate Lutheran General achieved its first Magnet recognition in 2005. With this fifth recognition, the American Nurses Credentialing Center praised the Advocate team for its extraordinarily high nurse satisfaction across the hospital — an exemplar they said is difficult to achieve.

“Magnet recognition has raised the bar for patient care and inspires our teammates to strive for excellence in everything they do,” said Allison Wyler, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital president. “Day in and day out, our nursing teams demonstrate an unwavering dedication to collaborative, innovative, exemplary professional practice. It is this commitment to providing our community with compassionate, high-quality care that helped us maintain our status as a Magnet-recognized organization.”

Advocate Health Care is part of Advocate Health, which employs more than 42,000 nurses nationwide, including 27 acute care facilities and more than 500 sites of care in the Midwest.
