Naperville extends hotel rebate agreements to make up for pandemic losses

Naperville City Council members have agreed to extend hotel tax agreements by two years to make up for revenue lost during the pandemic.

The extension affects agreements with Hotel Arista, Hotel Indigo, Embassy Suites and Marriott. Each hotel has a 20-year rebate agreement that was approved during the development or redevelopment of the property.

Council members voted 8-1 this week to back the extensions. Councilman Ian Holzhauer cast the only dissenting vote.

In letters to the council, hotel operators outlined how the pandemic affected their operations. Many pointed to revenue losses and layoffs during that time.

The extended agreements would reduce the rebate awarded during those additional years by the rebate amount paid from April 1, 2020, through March 31, 2022.
