This year’s Superhero Fun Run 3K will be held in a new location

A new location and route will be featured at the 2024 Superhero 3K Fun Run, a run/walk race presented by the Wheaton Park District in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wheaton A.M.

Moving to the Sensory Garden Playground at 2751 Navistar Drive in Lisle, the race will take runners and walkers through a 3K course at Danada Forest Preserve.

Runners are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero. Spotted at last year’s Superhero Fun Run were costumed homages to Spider-Man, Captain America, Batman, Superman and more.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Play for All Playground and Garden Foundation.

Both children and adults are invited to run or walk the untimed race which begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 6.

“We’re looking forward to partnering with the Wheaton Park District to bring the Superhero 3K Fun Run to the Sensory Garden Playground,” said Jim Hebert, Rotary Club of Wheaton A.M. member. “The Rotary Club of Wheaton A.M. has been a longtime contributor to the playground. Its unique location and theme will be a great way to support inclusive play.”

Spectators are encouraged to come out and show their support for their favorite superheroes. Right after the race, there will be a chance to meet costumed characters and enjoy music and more festivities.

The registration fee for either the in-person or virtual race is $35 per person through Friday, March 15. The fee is $40 March 16 through April 5. Race-day registration is $45.

A $4 discount per person is available when runners take advantage of the Fantastic Four Discount. To receive this discount, a team of 4 must be created and entered when registering. Team members do not have to register at the same time.

For runners who would like to participate in Race Wheaton, a series of races including the Superhero Fun Run, Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals and Reindeer Run, there is a $5 discount per event.

Wheelchairs and strollers are permitted and will begin the race in the last wave of participants. In-line skates, bicycles and other wheeled vehicles are not allowed.

Pets are not allowed; service animals must be approved for race participation by the race director a week before race day.

When registering, please note any special accommodation requests. Contact the race director at events@wheatonparks.org with any questions.

The race will go on rain or shine. In the event of severe inclement weather, the run committee will decide if the run should be canceled or postponed.

Packet pickup will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 at the Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard St. Packets also may be picked up from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. on race day at the Sensory Garden Playground.

The 37-acre Sensory Garden Playground features playground equipment, a sound garden and artwork designed to provide accessible play opportunities for all children. Ramps and transfer stations allow children using wheelchairs and other mobility aids to participate.

Plans are in the works for the addition of new equipment intended to appeal to children, age 5 to 12, and will be carried out later in 2024. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Play for All Playground and Garden Foundation.
