Plenty more fishing clubs worth checking out

Two columns for the price of one! I’d like to add to my list of area fishing clubs I can recommend without reservation and tell you about more outdoors shows that are coming quickly.

The Riverside Fishing Club holds regular meetings at Moose Lodge No. 424, located at 3625 S. Harlem Ave. in Berwyn. This is one of the more active clubs around. They hold many fishing events, a tackle swap meet, and they are staging a few musical concert events. The food they serve at the meetings is to die for. For more info, please call club President Tony Novak at 708-822-7762.

Arlington Anglers is a very active club with a great group of members. The meeting speakers need to be prepared to face some tough questions from this group. They know their stuff. I know because I have been grilled by them. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30 p.m., except August and December, at Poplar Creek Banquets and Bowling Alley located at 2354 W. Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates. For more info, please contact Chris Popp at 630-337-4520.

The shows just keep on coming. My buddy, Rich Komar, established the Tinley Park Fishing Show in 1992 to raise funds for athletic programs at Tinley Park High School. It soon became known as “the best little fishing show in the Midwest.” Under new management since Komar’s retirement, the Tinley Fish Expo is no longer a little show. Although not the size of the Schaumburg show, Tinley is catching up quickly.

The list of exhibitors is quite strong, and the lineup of seminar speakers cannot be matched. Tinley features some of the best local and regional fishermen to be found. You’ll be able to see experts talking about their favorite tips and techniques they use on waters that many of you have probably fished in the past. Plan on spending a whole day here, if not two.

Tinley will be presenting a magician and an Elvis impersonator among the many things to appeal to those not wholly into fishing. This truly is a show for the whole family. I think it’s a great idea.

The Tinley Park Fishing Travel & Outdoor Expo will be at The Tinley Park Convention Center, located at 18451 Convention Center Drive in Tinley Park. The dates and times are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 16, and 17, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 18. Prices for admission are reasonable and can be found at www.tinleyfishexpo.com. Parking is free.

The Northern Illinois Boat Show will be at the New Lake County Fairgrounds, located at 1060 East Peterson Road in Grayslake. The dates are Feb. 29 through March 3. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for veterans. Seniors and children under 12 will be admitted free. Parking is free.

This show isn’t merely for fishing enthusiasts. You’ll be able to look at fishing boats, deck boats, speedboats, cabin cruisers, pontoons, jet boats and others. If the pricing on new boats makes you shudder, the Northern Illinois Boat Show will have a number of dealers displaying excellent used boat options. If you are in the mood to sign on the dotted line, finance organizations will be on hand.
