Chicago a cappella will perform English choral masterworks at four concerts in February
Chicago a cappella will present four concerts in February with a “Cambridge” theme.
Inspired by a trip to Cambridge University in 2019, John William Trotter, Chicago a cappella's artistic director, has created a program of rich, vibrant English choral masterworks, and a new work by a 2023 HerVoice Composer Competition winner, performed in resonant cathedral-like spaces where sound and space work together in unique and harmonious synergy.
The concerts will be at: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 Division St. in River Forest; 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman Ave. in Evanston; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 310 S. Wheaton Ave. in Wheaton; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at St. Josaphat Church, 2311 N. Southport Ave. in Chicago.
Tickets are $38 or $48 preferred seating is available. Or buy an on-demand full concert replay the week of March 4 for $38.
The concert will feature works by William Byrd, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Benjamin Britten, as well as Grace Brigham, the winner of the HerVoice Emerging Women Composers Competition.
The performers, led by Trotter, include: bass Matthew Brennan, Ryan Cox and Aaron Wardell; tenors Ace Gangoso and Trevor Mitchell; sopranos Katelyn Lee, Kristin Lelm, and Cari Plachy; and mezzo-sopranos Chelsea Lyons and Emily Price.
The 110-minute program includes an intermission. The concert is recommended for ages 10 or older.

Drink ’n Sing
What do drinking songs, sea shanties, English choral masterworks, and ale have in common?
Join Chicago a cappella on Thursday, Feb. 1 for a “Drink ’n Sing” at the Revolution Brewpub in Logan Square. The group will perform songs from the “Cambridge Concert“ and join everyone in a high-spirited sing-along.
It will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the pub, 2323 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago.
This event is pay-what-you-can starting at $5. Select a different price level to fit your budget. Those at the $35 or $50 level will receive free drink tickets. You also may add a tax-deductible donation to support continued efforts to make Chicago a cappella’s music more accessible for all.
