Mount Prospect police investigate shooting in reckless driving incident
The Mount Prospect Police Department is currently investigating a shooting in a reckless driving incident late Sunday evening, officials said in a news release.
Police were dispatched shortly after 10:45 p.m. following a report of a person with a gunshot wound at a Shell gas station on 1200 N. River Road.
After arriving, officers found a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. The man was transported to the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for treatment.
According to police, the man had been following two cars that were driving recklessly near River Road and Golf Road in Des Plaines. While the man was in the process of calling 911, he saw one of the cars, a gray Kia hatchback, lose control and crash near Camp McDonald Road and Mandel Lane, police said.
The man reported seeing two men wearing all-black clothes abandon the crashed Kia, and get into the other car, a gray Kia SUV, the release said. The victim then drove around the block headed eastbound on Camp McDonald Road when he saw the SUV driving directly toward the front of his car. He stated someone in the SUV fired a gun in his direction as they drove past him.
After being shot, the man drove to the gas station where officers found him to try and get help inside the store.
Following a records check on the hatchback, police said it had been reported as stolen. The other vehicle was also found to be reported as stolen, according to police.
Crime scene technicians collected a shell casing and other evidence from the scene which will be sent to the forensic lab for analysis.
