Roselle Lions puts eyeglass/hearing aid box at new location
After several harrowing experiences with snowplows and autos in front of the Roselle Village Hall, the Roselle Lions eyeglass and hearing aid collection box is back in town at a new location.
The collection mailbox is now located in the rear parking lot of the Roselle American Legion at 344 E. Maple Ave. in Roselle between the two back doors.
The box began its collection life at the American Legion but was moved several years ago to a more visible spot at the village hall.
After two battles with snowplows and one with an auto that broke the box’s legs it was decided that once repaired it would be moved to a safer spot.
Residents can bring used eyeglasses and hearing aids as well as can pop tops, keys, home printer ink cartridges, and used sneakers to the collection box 24 hours a day.
Eyeglasses and hearing aids are refurbished and provided to needy people. Other items are sold for scrap and the Lions of Illinois Foundation uses the proceeds to provide much needed support to sight and hearing-impaired persons in Illinois.
The Roselle Lions Club collects an average of 600 pairs of eyeglasses a month as well as 15 hearing aids. The club hopes that more items will be collected now that the mailbox is back in town.
The club, which is marking its 90th year, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month at the American Legion. They welcome new members.
