Families invited to Northbrook’s Sunshine Preschool open house Jan. 18
Families interested in enrolling their children in the Northbrook Park District’s Sunshine Preschool are invited to attend an open house Jan. 18. At the open house, prospective families will have a chance to meet the teachers, experience the preschool classrooms and ask questions about registering for the 2024-2025 school year.
Sunshine Preschool, held at the Northbrook Leisure Center, caters to 3- and 4-year-olds by offering an individualized approach to learning in a small classroom setting. The Sunshine Preschool curriculum combines play-based learning with structured activities, exposing students to early literacy and math concepts in fun and creative ways. The curriculum also includes art, music and movement.
“Our preschool provides opportunities for play and discovery, fostering curiosity and creativity within a nurturing environment,” Recreation Supervisor Meghan McCarthy said. “Our teachers are experienced and engaging, and focus on both academic learning and social-emotional skill building.”
Sunshine Preschoolers participate in fun activities including painting ceramics, watching children’s theater and meeting Northbrook police officers and firefighters.
While the two programs are similarly structured, their content and activities vary based on age. “Our students in the program for 3-year-olds learn how to be good friends, how to interact with others and how to share,” McCarthy said. “The focus is on building these essential skills as a foundation for each child’s education.”
The program for 4-year-olds focuses on kindergarten readiness via play-based learning and the enhancement of social, emotional and intellectual growth, building on the skills developed in the program for 3-year-olds.
Sunshine Preschool follows a ratio of eight students per teacher, with up to two teachers in each classroom. Our experienced educators specialize in early childhood development and education, and provide regular updates to families about the students’ progress throughout the school year.
The open house will provide an opportunity for families to learn about preschool enrichment programs taking place at the Leisure Center immediately after the conclusion of the Sunshine Preschool school day. Current enrichment offerings include art, nature, cooking, STEM and sports classes.
The free open house is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave., in Northbrook. For information, call (847) 291-2993.
