Elmhurst Symphony presents ‘Celebration of the Dance’ Jan. 20-21

The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra is presenting a “Celebration of the Dance” at two performances Jan. 20-21.

This program features Craig Trompeter playing viola da gamba, a string instrument that came on the musical scene in Spain in the 1500s. A distant relative to both the modern guitar and orchestral string instruments, it most closely resembles a modern cello but usually sounds a bit softer and brighter than its orchestral cousin.

Mary Stolper will be featured on flute.

The season will continue Sunday, March 10, with “Majestic Bruckner.” 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner, who is best known for his symphonies and sacred music.

The Elmhurst Symphony will close out the season with “La Mer” Saturday, May 4, featuring cellist Alexander Hersh, who has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting and creative talents of his generation. Having made solo appearances with the Boston Pops and Houston Symphony, Hersh makes his Elmhurst Symphony debut with this performance.

The program will feature Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” and “Ibéria” (from “Images pour orchestre”) and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor.
