Four charged in August slayings of teenage brothers near Glenview

A pair of teenage brothers fatally shot outside their Glenview-area home in August were killed in revenge for an earlier altercation, authorities said Wednesday in announcing charges against four suspects in the killings.

Carlos Miranda, 22, of Prospect Heights; Griselda Martinez, 42, of Itasca; Sergio Patino-Jaime, 19, of Wheeling; and a 15-year-old juvenile all face first-degree murder charges stemming from the slayings of 16-year-old Jose Guzman-Ezquivel and 19-year-old Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel, Cook County sheriff’s police said.

The three adult suspects appeared in Cook County court Tuesday. Miranda was ordered held in custody at the county jail, while Martinez and Patino-Jaime were placed on electronic monitoring, according to the sheriff’s office.

The juvenile suspect appeared in court Wednesday and was ordered held at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.

Sheriff’s police said deputies called at about 9:06 p.m. Aug. 19 to the 14000 block of Michael Todd Terrace arrived to find the brothers suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Jose Guzman-Ezquivel was pronounced dead at the scene, while Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel was taken to a hospital, where he later died. A third victim, a 16-year-old boy, suffered a graze wound to his back, authorities said.

During their investigation, sheriff’s detectives learned that Jose Guzman-Ezquivel and Miranda had been involved in a physical altercation in July, authorities said. After the fight, the 15-year-old juvenile suspect obtained a picture of Jose Guzman-Ezquivel in order to identify him and seek revenge, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Aug. 19, Miranda and the juvenile approached the brothers outside an apartment complex and shot Jose Guzman-Ezquivel several times at close range, sheriff’s police said. Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel and the third victim were shot from behind as they attempted to flee, the sheriff’s office reported.

Officers recovered a cellphone belonging to the juvenile suspect at the scene, and detectives pieced together cellphone data, surveillance footage and other digital evidence to identify the suspected shooters, as well as Martinez and Patino-Jaime, authorities said.

According to the sheriff’s office, Martinez acted as a lookout during the attack, while Patino-Jaime helped dispose of the vehicle used to travel to and from the scene.

The killings were mourned by the Glenbrook South High School community. Jose Guzman-Ezquivel was just days from beginning his junior year at the high school, and his older brother was a member of the Class of 2022.

Family members described the teens as caring sons and siblings, who loved playing soccer and had bright futures.
