Kane County urges blood testing for lead in some communities
To mark Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the Kane County Health Department is recommending that children living in certain parts of the county have their blood tested for lead levels.
The ZIP codes include 50505, 60506 and 60507 (Aurora), 60109 (Burlington), 60120 and 60121 (Elgin), and 60144 (Kaneville). Children in those areas are at increased risk for lead exposure, mostly due to having housing that was built with lead plumbing and lead-containing paint, according to the health department.
The health department will assist those who have high lead levels figure out where the lead came from, and ways to prevent further exposure.
