'Truth Grounding' exhibit coming to Fine Line's Kavanagh Gallery

The Kavanagh Gallery at Fine Line Creative Arts Center will be featuring the art of Chicago-area artist Doug DeWitt in a solo exhibit called "Ground Truthing - Promises, Laments and Tipping Points."

DeWitt's art is inspired by natural history and Midwest landscapes. Originally from northwestern Ohio, DeWitt spent many childhood hours exploring his grandparents' farm buildings and catching crawdads in the creek near his home. He received a BFA in Graphic Design from Bowling Green State University in 1985, then moved to New England to experience the coastal landscape while working in Boston.

Returning to the Midwest, DeWitt earned an MA in Studio Arts from Illinois State University in 1990. He designed exhibits featuring natural history, wildlife and anthropology at the Field Museum of Natural History and John G. Shedd Aquarium, both in Chicago, where his love of nature, science and history merged with his art.

DeWitt exhibits his artwork throughout the Chicago region and beyond. He is currently an ecologist and land manager with Tallgrass Restoration, LLC, a firm that restores native prairies, woodlands and wetlands, a profession that continues to inspire his art.

The "Truth Grounding" exhibition comprises found-object sculptures inspired by the Midwest landscape. The work reflects patterns and forms in nature without denying humanity's presence while also evoking memories of specific places. The sculptures combine weathered natural and manufactured objects in the search for visual harmony arising from advanced material decay.

A complimentary opening reception will occur on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.

It's an opportunity to meet the artist and hear about the art from the person who created it. Light refreshments will be served during the evening.

The gallery is open to the public on Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Aug. 31 to Oct. 6.

The show will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 2, and Monday, Sept. 4, for the Labor Day weekend.

There is never an admission fee to view the art at Fine Line Creative Arts Center, 37W570 Bolcum Road, just west of Randall Road in St. Charles.
