Man charged with fleeing police after West Chicago traffic stop
A man from Algonquin has been accused of trying to flee West Chicago police in a car chase.
Germaine Sharpe, 48, of the 2300 block of Dawson Lane, is charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set Sunday at $150,000.
Authorities say that at 1:03 a.m. Sunday, Sharpe was stopped for driving 62 mph in a 45-mph zone. The police officer learned Sharpe was wanted in Kane County on a failure-to-appear-in-court warrant.
Sharpe drove off on North Avenue, then on St. Charles Road, where he hit a curb and damaged his vehicle, authorities said.
He is accused of driving 80 mph in a 35-mph zone. Police also say he had a half-gram of cocaine hidden in a pack of cigarettes, according to court records.
Sharpe also is charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice for giving the officer a false name and false birth date, driving while his license is revoked, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and obstructing an officer, court records said.
Sharpe would have to post $15,000 to be freed pretrial on the DuPage case.
