Firefighters battle blaze at senior housing complex in Schaumburg

The afternoon fire at a four-story senior condo complex on Wise Road in Schaumburg involved at least two upper-floor units, though approximately 20 units in the building were affected by smoke or water damage, police said.

ABC 7 Chicago reported a firefighter, a police officer and four residents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after the blaze broke out at Emerald Village Senior Apartments, 150 W. Wise Road.

Westbound Wise Road remained closed at Roselle Road as of 5:30 p.m. Friday.

With the entire condo building evacuated, nearby Frost Junior High School at 320 W. Wise Road was used as a reunification point for families, police said.

"The police came, and said we had to evacuate, so I use a walker, and they were helping me to the fireplace, and then they said somebody down the hall needed help, so they all ran to that. Another policeman in the stairway helped me down, and they got me out right away," resident Audrey Gallagher told ABC 7.

No determination of a cause had been made Friday afternoon.
