Second City Canine Rescue holds pet adoption July 15

Animal shelters across the nation are full to overflowing, and scores of adoptable pets are waiting even longer to find loving homes.

Second City Canine Rescue, Palatine, is proud to partner with PetSmart Charities to bring adoptable dogs to the Schaumburg PetSmart, 1440 E. Golf Road, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15, in support of National Adoption Week.

A nationwide shortage of veterinary practitioners to conduct spay and neuter surgeries has contributed to the backlog of animals in shelters as well as increased owner surrenders, economic pressures and irresponsible breeding.

Longer lengths of stays can create additional stress for pets, and also strains resources for shelters already struggling to care for pets amid a labor shortage and increasing costs of care.

During the in-store event in Schaumburg, SCCR invites those with room in their hearts and homes to meet adoptable pets in the area. Opportunities will be given to spend time with animals in spacious areas to find just the right match. Staff and volunteers will help potential adopters learn about caring for a pet and the types of tools, products and services that can support new pet parents as they welcome new family members.

"Together with PetSmart Charities, we are making forever homes a reality," said Dr. Jacquie Cobb, SCCR founder and president. "This collaboration means hope for countless deserving dogs - and the families who adopt them."

"If you're looking to do something good for your family, community and even country, consider opening your home to a new best friend," said Heidi Marston, director of Pet Placement Initiatives at PetSmart Charities.

"We continue to learn more about the benefits of the human animal bond, and adopting a pet not only adds to the quality of life, it's also a significant contribution you can make to the country.

"Our new policy to allow pet parents to schedule sterilization after adoptions promises to help more pets find people to love. We're proud to work alongside partners such as Second City Canine Rescue, working so hard to make meaningful connections."

One loving and resilient dog looking for a connection and her forever home is Nia. Despite past neglect and mistreatment, Nia's spirit remains unbroken, and she has an abundance of love to give. Nia is great with kids and cats, and while she loves lounging and snuggling on the sofa, she also has a playful side.

Though Nia can be dog selective, she has done well with proper introductions. A single-family house with a fenced-in yard would be ideal for her, as she loves sunbathing. An excellent guard dog, Nia is a gentle and affectionate soul eager for snuggles.

If you're ready to give Nia the love she deserves, she is patiently waiting for you.
