Naperville man charged in hit-and-run crash that killed bicyclist in West Chicago

A Naperville man has been charged with fleeing a crash that killed a man Tuesday night in West Chicago.

John C. Gray, 26, of the 400 block of Travelaire Lane, is charged with one felony count of failure to report an accident causing death.

Bail was set Thursday at $500,000. Gray would need to post $50,000 bond to be released pretrial.

The crash happened at 10:49 p.m. on Joliet Street near Wilson Street. Police found 40-year-old Renato Vargas-Gutierrez in a grassy area with his bicycle underneath him. He died at the scene.

Authorities allege he was riding south on Joliet when he was hit by Gray, who was driving south on Joliet.

Police found Gray about four minutes later, near Stevens Court and Continental Drive.

Gray could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

His next court appearance is Aug. 3.

DuPage County court records show in 2021, Gray was accused of deliberately causing a crash on 75th Street in Woodridge, possession of ammunition without an Firearm Owner's Identification card and disorderly conduct. He pleaded guilty to the ammunition charge.

The 2021 charges alleged he stopped deliberately in traffic, causing a crash, that he had two bullets in his pocket, and threatened to shoot a man. In 2018, Gray pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI for a crash in Lombard, where he had open alcohol in the vehicle.
