Baseball: Hersey wins first regional title since 2004

The last time Hersey won a regional title none of their players were even born yet.

The Huskies won their first regional title since 2004 when they rallied Saturday to beat Warren 5-3 in Gurnee.

"We laughed about it today," said Hersey coach Wally Brownley, who was getting his teaching degree at Illinois State at the time.

"I told them they are building a legacy right now. I am so proud of our guys. There is no quit in them."

Hersey (28-8), which won 11 in a row, will meet Barrington in Thursday's sectional semifinal at Mundelein at 4:30 PM. Hersey has won both previous meetings with the Broncos.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Hersey struck for four runs.

Brandon Pflomm led the inning off with an infield single on a misplayed comebacker. After a walk,

Keegan Luxem had a key two-run double in the inning. Bryk Barnard had an RBI bunt single. Brady Klehr would later score on an error.

Drew Phillips had a hit and two runs scored for Hersey.

Luxem picked up the win for the Huskies. The 6-foot-5 sophomore went the distance striking out seven while allowing four hits.

Warren (27-8), which committed six errors, was led by Adan Schilz, who had a double and a RBI and Beck Kjeldberg, who had a single and a RBI.

Libertyville 6, Conant 5 (10 innings):

Tyler DeFranco's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th to score Quinn Schambow enabled the Wildcats (21-13) to outlast host Conant in the regional final.

Libertyville (21-13) will meet Stevenson Wednesday at the Mundelein sectional semifinals at 4:30 PM. The two teams split their previous meetings this season.

Libertyville had trailed Conant 3-2 in the top of the seventh. The Wildcats rallied for three runs to surge ahead 5-3 thanks to a two-run homer by Josh Holst. But Conant came back to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Schambow had four hits, including a triple. He also scored two runs and had a RBI. Graham Goodman had two hits and two RBI while Holst had two hits.

Conant (22-15) was led by Nicholas Nitti, who had three hits. Including a home run and two RBI. Isaiah Rhodes had a hit and two RBI, Cooper Hanson had two hits while Matthew Maize had a hit and a RBI.

Evanston 9, Elk Grove 1:

Elk Grove (16-15) did not have enough against the top seeded Wildkits in Evanston.

New Trier 5, Prospect 1:

Prospect (17-14) had their season end in the regional final at Loyola. Jack Friar and Zach Moreth each had hits for Prospect while Matthew Fouch had the lone RBI, driving in Moreth.

Glenbrook North 4, Maine South 0:

Maine South was blanked at the regional final at Niles West. Noah Collins and Logan Tomlinson had the only hits for the Hawks (20-16-1).

Class 3A:

Grayslake Central 10, Deerfield 6:

Grayslake Central had a pair of huge innings to eliminate Deerfield.

Grayslake Central (29-7) will meet Crystal Lake South on Thursday in the Grayslake Central sectional semifinals.

"We have done what we have done what we have all year," Grayslake Central Troy Whalen. "We made some great plays defensively It was a great team win. We bounced back."

The Rams scored four runs in the first to lead 4-2. They then were able to put the game away in the 5th when they scored five times thanks to a pair of bunts to surge ahead 10-4.

Garrett Guenther had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Chris Rogers had two hits, including a double and drove in a run. Jack Gerbasi, Luke Mudd, Riley Policht and Sam Cooper each had a hit for the Rams.

Lake Forest 10, Antioch 7:

Antioch's season came to and end when the Sequoits (20-14-1) were outslugged by Lake Forest.

Crystal Lake South 11, St. Viator 0 (6 innings):

The Gators (25-7) ended St. Viator's season by blanking the Lions (19-10). Jake Glassetter had two hits while Zan Von Schlegell, Michael Nix and Sean Hogan each had hits for the Lions.
