Mount Prospect Garden Club celebrates 60 years of service

The Garden Club of Mount Prospect was organized in May, 1963. The club's meetings, programs and projects are designed to carry out the vision of the founding members' mission statement to "encourage interest in gardening and horticulture, artistic use of plant materials, civic beauty and conservation of natural resources."

On May 9, the garden club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a luncheon attended by approximately 90 people, including Mount Prospect Mayor Paul Hoefert; Emily Dattilo, director of the Mount Prospect Historical Society; and leadership from the Garden Clubs of Illinois.

The Mount Prospect Garden Club is an award-winning garden club that supports a number of projects that contribute to the beauty of Mount Prospect.

The club's accomplishments include:

• Received the Shining Star Award from the village twice, in 1997 for beautification of Mount Prospect and in 2011, for the Green Thumb Award program.

• Maintains the Mount Prospect Historical Society gardens.

• Maintains the butterfly garden in Moehling Park.

• Supports Arbor Day each year.

• Supports a scholarship program through the Garden Clubs of Illinois.

• Supports garden-themed programs at the Mount Prospect Library.

The purpose of the club was, and still is, to keep Mount Prospect beautiful. Over its 60 years of service, it has accomplished that goal.

The Mount Prospect Garden Club meets monthly between September and April, and each month features a renowned speaker on a current topic of interest to gardeners. Guests are welcome to attend.
