Northbrook Park District to Begin Replacement Project for Pathway Between Meadowhill Park and Techny Prairie Park & Fields

NORTHBROOK, IL: Following drainage and flooding issues, the pathway at Meadowhill Park, 1401 Maple Ave, Northbrook, is scheduled for improvements this Spring. The project is part of the 2023 Northbrook Park District Capital Improvement Plan. The specific project area is located on the south side of the park along the pathway connecting Meadowhill Park and Techny Prairie Park & Fields.

The pathway was originally designed to allow water to drain down from neighboring residential properties over the path and into the adjacent river. Over time, the plant material on the west side of the pathway has matured, obstructing the water's flow over the path. This has caused further grading issues, especially as the water often contains sediment. The combination of plant growth and sediment buildup causes the pathway to flood and in winter months this can result in frozen patches. As a result, the asphalt pathway has degraded and now requires complete replacement.

This project aims to remove and replace the failing pathway, remove the overgrown plant material, regrade the riverbank, add drainage pipes and replant the riverbank with regionally appropriate native plantings.

Construction is slated to begin April 17 and the pathway will remain closed for approximately five weeks weather depending. Director of Parks and Properties Chris Leiner is hopeful the pathway will be ready for use by mid-May.

"The short disruption in trail use will be well worth the wait", said Leiner. "The new section of trail will drain faster and prevent ice buildup in winter months."

During the renovation, the pathway is a construction site, and a portion of the path will be closed. Access will not be possible between the two parks.

With community input, the District completed and adopted a ten-year Comprehensive Master Plan which includes an annual Capital Improvement Plan. These documents forecast repair and replacement needs for parks, facilities and equipment each year. Through this input process, the community identified maintaining existing park amenities and infrastructure as the most important action for the Park District. The renovation is one of several Capital Improvement Plan projects taking place in 2023 at the Northbrook Park District.
