Ansari, Cabeen and Radlinski in Geneva District 304

It's been a year of change when it comes to the leadership of Geneva Unit School District 304. From the announcement that longtime Superintendent Kent Mutchler would be departing at the end of the school year to the hiring of his replacement to the resignation of three school board members, the theme of the past 12 months has been turnover at the top.

So, when district voters head to the polls, one thing they'll be deciding is whether they've seen enough change or if more is in store.

Three sitting board members - two of them appointed last spring to replace outgoing members - and three newcomers are seeking three, 4-year board terms in the April 4 election. The field includes incumbents Molly Ansari, Larry Cabeen and Paul Radlinski and former Congressional candidate Andrea Heeg, energy consultant Brent Nakayama, and dance studio owner Brittnie Quinn Sopcak.

Heeg and Quinn Sopcak declined our interview requests, did not fill out a candidate questionnaire and chose not to attend a League of Women Voters forum in February. That lack of participation limits the ability for us and for voters to evaluate their qualifications.

Nakayama also did not respond to interview requests or a candidate questionnaire, but did attend the forum. His remarks there - focusing on his background in strategic planning and dedication to inclusive and collaborative work environments - make him an intriguing option.

However, given the need for some stability in the leadership ranks and the strength of the incumbents, Ansari, Cabeen and Radlinski are our choices.

Ansari, a licensed professional counselor and college professor, would bring a focus to mental health issues at a time when students continue to struggle with the fallout from the pandemic.

Cabeen, a retired airline pilot, is the most experienced candidate in the field and shows a willingness to focus on all the district's constituencies.

Radlinski, recently retired from managing several chemical global businesses, would bring a strong financial background to the panel.

We endorse Ansari, Cabeen and Radlinski.

Larry Cabeen
Paul Radlinski
