Q&A

Q: Why are you running for this office, whether for reelection or election the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you?

A: My passion for running is integrity, accountability and increased parent involvement to further our students' academic successes.

Q: What is the role of the school board in setting and monitoring curriculum?

A: The school board approves the curriculum and ensures the teachers have the resources to implement them.

Q: Are there curriculum issues within the district that you feel need particular attention from the board?

A: Purchasing short term, expensive curriculums should be looked at. Many teachers have voiced concerns over the district's changing/purchasing new curriculums where they have to start all over again.

Q: How do you view your role in confronting policy or curriculum controversies: provide leadership even if unpopular, give a voice to constituents - even ones with whom you disagree, or defer to state authorities?

A: I view my role as a representative of the community and the district. I will do the best for all the students. I will be vocal and respectful with my opinions.

Q: Concerns are growing regarding a new resurgence of the pandemic. If another massive outbreak of infectious disease occurs, what have we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that will guide your decision making?

A: One thing we have learned is that we must use due process and be lawful in all aspects. As an RN who worked COVID, I have more health knowledge than the average layperson. Many things were unknown but that is what science is all about. Many healthy students and staff suffered with unlawful quarantines by the district. In the future, I would confer with many government departments, attorneys, and other countrywide school districts for best practice.

Q: Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach agreement and manage school district policy? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions of your school board.

A: As a professional, I have been part of many decision-making processes. The current policy was brought up, concerns from all stakeholders heard, research of policies of similar companies done, proposed changes brought to various company councils, changes made and drafts adopted. They are currently reviewed every few years for relevance and the process repeats.

I like the participation of all stake holders and various councils/committees. I would continue that multi-faceted style of decision-making in regards to policies in the district.

Q: What makes you the best candidate for the job?

A: I am a parent, leader, volunteer and health professional in the community. I attend most school district meetings and events. I am assertive and respectful with my opinion. I value integrity and accountability. I promise to continue to work hard furthering our students' successes.

Q: What's one good idea you have to better your district that no one is talking about yet?

A: I have 2 great ideas that are connected. One is the board having more open dialogue with public comment participants. Other nearby school districts allow it and it shows that the board welcomes and appreciates them.

I would like to have the various parent groups meet formally prior to each board meeting. Board members and/or superintendent/staff would be welcome. (Of course only 2 board members at a time).

Both of these ideas would make our board meetings go smoother and the community would feel heard.
