Sewa International-FMSC: February 2023
As members of the Chicago Chapter of Sewa International LEAD 2023 program, we volunteered on the night of Feb 4, 2023, at Feed My Starving Children's (FMSC) Schaumburg, IL location.
Sewa International (www.sewausa.org) believes that the whole world is our family. The program provides students in grades 8-12 opportunities to participate in and/or lead various community service activities, helping them earn volunteer hours in the process. Sewa believes the world is our family. Students from other faiths and communities are welcome to participate.
We joined FMSC in their mission to provide nutritionally complete meals for starving and malnourished people around the world. We hand-packed rice, soy, dried vegetables, and a nutritionally complete blend of vitamins and minerals into bags. Then, we sealed, boxed, and placed these meals on pallets for them to be shipped to children in need around the world.
During this packing session, we packed 145 boxes containing a total of 31,320 meals. That is enough to feed 85 kids for a year and covers the cost of $7,516.80.
So far in February, Sewa has volunteered for 37 hours in 2023. We plan to have many more engagements with other FMSC locations in Chicagoland in the coming months.
Volunteering at FMSC gave us the chance to impact hundreds of kids in just two hours. We had a one-of-a-kind experience of what it's like to make a tangible difference in a short period of time.
