Name-change centennial rates as special date in Village history

History is much more than a collection of dates.

But some dates do, unquestionably, play key roles in piecing together the framework of history - July 4, 1776; Dec. 7, 1941; Sept. 11, 2001 - there is no disputing that some dates are naturally more recognizable (more important?) than others.

Nations, families, individuals, cities, towns - all have their own significant historical dates. And many of those dates assume the spotlight - at least briefly - when a special anniversary of a specific date occurs.

Northbrook is no different, and in just a few weeks one of the Village's key milestones will mark exactly 100 years: the name change from Shermerville to Northbrook on Jan. 8, 1923.

That name change along with the incorporation of the Village on Nov. 18, 1901 (121 years ago) likely rank as the top two significant dates in Northbrook history. To learn more about the path to incorporation for Shermerville and then, just 22 years later, the drive to drop the name of Shermerville, check out "Northbrook, Illinois: The Fabric of Our History," which was published during Northbrook's centennial year of 2001.

The Northbrook Historical Society will commemorate both anniversaries on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2-4 p.m. at the History Museum, 1776 Walters Ave. All are welcome to visit the Shermerville exhibit, take a tour of Shermerville-era rooms, and enjoy a complimentary old-time sarsaparilla like one that might have been served in that building during the Shermerville days when it was the home of Bartelme's Northfield Inn.

While 100 years stands out as one of the biggest birthdays for anyone and anything, the Historical Society would also like to point out two other significant milestones being reached this year regarding its two buildings.

First, the sign outside the History Museum proclaims that the Northfield Inn was established in 1882 ... 140 years ago. And the other Historical Society building - the Hope Union Heritage Center at 1812 Chapel Court - was built by volunteers as the Hope Union Church in 1892 ... 130 years ago.

History always will consist of more than dates. But it also serves a worthwhile purpose to remember the most significant dates ... especially when they help us learn more about the past when commemorating special accomplishments and anniversaries.
