Endorsement: Raja Krishnamoorthi for U.S. House

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

Occasionally, we come across a race where we wish we could endorse both candidates.

In the Nov. 8 election in the newly drawn 8th Congressional District, we like both incumbent Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi of Schaumburg and his Republican opponent Chris Dargis, a retired Navy officer from Palatine.

They differ in their views. Krishnamoorthi is a left-of-center moderate. Dargis is an establishment conservative. But both are able, talented candidates who exercise common sense, a vital attribute in today's hyperbolic politics.

The new district map is roughly centered in Schaumburg and takes in parts of northwest Cook, northeast DuPage and northeast Kane counties. Our endorsement goes to Krishnamoorthi, who has grown in office during his three terms in the House.

We are particularly pleased with Krishnamoorthi's outreach across the aisle. His latest ranking in The Lugar Center Bipartisan Index shows him to be one of only two members of the suburban delegation with a positive score - a significant evolution from his early days in the House when he had been seen as highly partisan.

As we said in our endorsement in the spring primary, at a time of growing partisan rancor in the House, Krishnamoorthi has found ways to work effectively with colleagues of both parties. He is a likable problem solver who gets things done - someone with the experience to understand how to work effectively when his party controls the House and when it does not.
