Mount Prospect hosting suicide awareness event Sept. 21

The Mount Prospect Human Services Department is hosting a Suicide Prevention Awareness Community Event on Sept. 21, in the Farley Community Room of village hall, 50 S. Emerson St.

In 2020, suicide was the 12th leading cause of death for all ages in the United States. The department hopes the event will promote dialogue, support and awareness of resources that are available to assist those in need of help.

The event will feature a resource fair from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., a number of local agencies that provide mental health services in the community; a 1-mile awareness walk departing village hall at 5:30 p.m.; and speaker presentations from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., featuring Laura Kane of Marshmallow's Hope and Ryan Shannon.

Parents considering bringing young children should be advised that speakers will present their lived experience with suicide.

Registration is required by calling (847) 870-5680 or visiting www.mountprospect.org/suicideprevention.
