Northbrook earns Community Justice award

The Village of Northbrook will receive Open Communities' Rayna & Marvin Miller Community Justice Award at the organization's Agents of Change award ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe.

Celebrating 50 years, Open Communities encourages fair housing practices on the North Shore. Its roots actually date further back than 1972: A 1965 rally at the Winnetka Village Green, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presented his first civil rights rally in an all-white suburb, according to Open Communities' website, open-communities.org.

The Rayna & Marvin Miller award "honors an individual/organization who chose to speak to the inequities in the housing community and demanded we could do more," the anniversary celebration information stated.

The 2013 recipient of the Miller award, Gail Schechter, will gain Open Communities' Jean R. Cleland Social Action award, and WBEZ radio will receive the Spirit of Open Communities award. Tickets cost is $100. Visit open-communities.org.

The Hunger Resource Network has scheduled a unique fundraiser at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, 3535 Dundee Road, on Wednesday, Sept. 7: a golf ball drop.

A thousand golf balls will be sold - and later dropped on a green - at four price levels from one ball for $10 to 15 balls for $100. There also are three levels of event sponsorship for the event.

Some of that money will come back to several lucky entrants in the form of first- through third-place prizes for the balls that land closest to the pin. The person who purchases the ball that winds up closest to the pin wins $1,000. There also is a $25 prize for the ball farthest from the pin.

Donations help support Hunger Resource Network's Community Outreach Day to help feed families in need. Winners of the golf ball drop don't need to be present at Heritage Oaks.

The event will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 7. Attendance is free and light appetizers will be served.

To view the event and purchase the golf balls or sponsorships, visit hungerresourcenetwork.org. To RSVP, email kerryt@hungerresource.org.
