Burlington Central graduate wins PEO scholarship

Kyriaki Karavasis, a senior at Central High School in Burlington, was selected to receive a P.E.O. STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter DY of Elgin.

Kyriaki is a member of the National Honors Society as well as the Spanish Honors Society. She is also an AP Scholar with Honor Award recipient and a member of the Varsity Academic Bowl Team. Kyriaki has accomplished all of this while being a dual enrollment student also attending Elgin Community College.

She has volunteered weekly at Fox Valley Food for Health and this summer will take part in Project Mexico, an organization which does fundraising to build a home for a family in need.

Kyriaki is also a member of Elgin's St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, active in their youth group and church school. She is involved in many extra curricular school activities and also works at The Village Squire Restaurant in South Elgin.

Kyriaki will be attending University of Illinois in the fall accepted into their College of Engineering.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship was established in 2009 to provide scholarships for high school women who exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for success.

Since its inception in 1869, this nonprofit philanthropic organization has helped more than 116,000 women pursue educational goals by providing grants, scholarships, awards and loans.

Chapter DY was chartered in 1933 and is one of 6,000 chapters with 205,000 members nationwide.
