White Sox's Anderson begins rehab assignment, goes 2-for-4 with Class AAA Charlotte

The White Sox offense has been rolling, scoring 41 runs in five games heading into Tuesday night's matchup against the Tigers.

The Sox came to life without their best hitter, and it's looking like Tim Anderson is going to be back in the lineup Monday against the Blue Jays at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Anderson, who landed on the injured list after straining his right groin in a May 29 game against the Cubs, started a rehab assignment with Class AAA Charlotte Tuesday night.

The Sox's shortstop was Charlotte's designated hitter and he went 2-for-4 in an International League game against Jacksonville.

Leading off for Charlotte in the first inning, Anderson grounded out. He singled in the third and the fifth and struck out in the eighth.

Anderson is hitting .356/.393/.503 with 5 home runs and 19 RBI in 40 games for the White Sox.

Kelly activated:

The Sox lost closer Liam Hendriks to injury Tuesday, but they got Joe Kelly back in the bullpen.

Kelly went on the injured list on May 26 with a strained left hamstring.

After missing the first month of the season with a right biceps nerve injury, Kelly gave up 5 runs in ⅔ of an inning in his second appearance with the White Sox before settling down.

In his last four games before the hamstring issue, the 34-year-old Kelly had 6 strikeouts over 3⅔ scoreless innings.

Pitching change:

Before Tuesday night's game at Detroit, the White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Davis Martin from Class AAA Charlotte and optioned left-hander Bennett Sousa.

Martin made two spot starts for the Sox earlier in the season and was 0-2 with a 4.11 ERA.

Sousa made 25 relief appearances and was 3-0 with an 8.41 ERA and 1 save. Sousa was on the mound against the Dodgers last Thursday at Guaranteed Rate Field when manager Tony La Russa ordered an intentional walk to Trea Turner on a 1-2 count.

Max Muncy followed with a 3-run homer in Los Angeles' 11-9 win.
