AAUW Naperville Cariya Reed Legacy Scholarship goes to Mae Gangi

The American Association of University Women Naperville Area recently announced that Maelyn (Mae) Gangi, a senior at Naperville Central High School, has been selected to receive the 2022 Cariya Reed Legacy Scholarship for $5,000.

The scholarship honors Cariya Reed, a young girl whose life ended too soon due to domestic violence. The scholarship's goal is to further the education of a female senior attending an Illinois District 203 or 204 high school who intends to study nursing or pursue a degree leading to medical school.

Mae's 4.3 GPA at Naperville Central tells only a fraction of the story of her accomplishments. She has overcome tremendous stressors in her life, and has done so while continuing to succeed academically, volunteer in the community, support her school peers, and provide leadership in her chosen field of study - Psychology.

Mae has participated in school clubs, and even helped to found a new club at Central (the Mental Health Matters Club). She is a board member for her school's chapter of National Honor Society and is a favorite of all of her teachers due to her diligence and cheerfulness. Personally, Mae is a bright young woman who is self-assured and strong-willed enough for herself and her fellow women. This fine young lady will certainly be a standout even amongst her classmates at Vanderbilt University.
