Letters: Fly rainbow flag to show support for neighbors

As our local elected leaders debate the merits of displaying the Pride flag above our public spaces, we, the members of First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, would like to remind our neighbors that all of us as private citizens have the power to welcome our LGBTQIA+ friends and family members with private displays of flags on our property.

Please join us and other local faith communities in displaying pride flags for Pride Month in June. While we await our civic governments and institutions to fully embrace the values expressed in their statements regarding diversity, equity and inclusion, we can all plant a pride flag in our front yards, hang a rainbow from our flagpoles and place banners in our windows. These actions communicate that people of all races, religions, orientations and gender identities are welcome in our communities.

June often marks new beginnings. In the Northwest suburbs, let's begin a new tradition of showing our support of the LGBTQIA+ community by displaying the important symbol of the rainbow flag.
