Rally for Gun Safety

Spurred by the latest fatal school shooting - May 24 at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas - incoming Glenbrook South seniors Drew Duffy and Marlene Lee have organized a Glenview Rally for Gun Safety.

It takes place at 2 p.m. June 4 at Jackman Park, 1930 Prairie St., Glenview.

The rally is intended for any and all to remember the victims of gun violence and call for lawmakers at all levels of government to pass gun safety legislation, according to a release.

Confirmed speakers at the rally include state Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz (D-17th) and 14th District Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton. Local gun safety advocates, concerned students and survivors also will speak, the release stated.

Event sponsors include Moms Demand Action, Indivisible Glenview and Democrats of Northfield Township.

The roundabout

Construction on the roundabout on Patriot Boulevard at the Costco/Home Depot access is beginning.

The first phase consists of creating the free-flowing right turn lane from the stores into Patriot Boulevard. That work is expected to be completed by June 28.

Phase 2 will see construction of the main components of the roundabout, and is anticipated to run from July 6 through Aug. 30.

The roundabout, approved by the Glenview Village Board on Dec. 7, 2021, is intended to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection, improve safety and reduce vehicle emissions.

People can watch magician Benjamin Barnes, listen to a disc jockey play music, play blackjack, poker, craps and roulette, and bid on some raffle and silent auction prizes like tickets to a Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers football game. The grand prize is a two-our Sunset sailboat cruise on Lake Michigan for four people with beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres.

In lieu of a sit-down dinner, food trucks will be on premises, with late-night fare provided by Lou Malnati's Pizza and Graeter's Ice Cream.

This year Family Service Center also will honor the group, CATCH (Community Action Together for Children's Health) as its 2022 Heart of the Family award winner.

Tickets are $175 each, or $150 each on a party of 10 or more. Visit familyservicecenter.com to purchase them and for more information. Raffle tickets also are available at $20 apiece.

Wilmette history

As part of Wilmette's sesquicentennial this year, people connected to the village may lend their personal touch to the celebration.

The Wilmette Historical Museum and Wilmette Public Library are collecting stories for an oral history project. Current and former residents, business owners, teachers, members of Wilmette clubs, congregations and organizations, and others familiar with Wilmette are encouraged to share their memories and experiences of the place. The museum and library will record, collect and archive these stories to preserve them for future generations.

"Voices of Wilmette" kits are available for use at the library and museum by appointment, or may be checked out at the library and used at home. Time and focus of the recordings is up to the individual.

For help, call EvaAnne Johnson at the library, (847) 256-6936; or Kathy Hussey-Arntson at the museum, (847) 853-7666.

Also, the Wilmette 150 group has started a Sesquicentennial Photography Project. People are asked to submit photos of village life around the theme, "Building Community." The group is collecting photos until Sept. 30, 2022; a selection of the contributed photos will be used in an exhibition in October and, afterward, displayed at locations throughout Wilmette. Some will be archived by the Wilmette Historical Museum.

There are photographers' guidelines and submission instructions available at wilmette150.org. People may also contact project leader Jan Loew at jerryloew@aol.com or, for technical questions, Rachel Ramirez at ramirezr@wilmette.com or (847) 853-7714.
