'Court of Dreams' offers unique experience for individuals with Down syndrome
The Chicago Bulls, in partnership with Advocate Health Care, hosted 14 individuals with Down syndrome, along with their guests, for a special "Court of Dreams" experience Wednesday April 6.
Individuals and families from the Advocate Medical Group Adult Down Syndrome Center were joined by Bill Wennington and Chuck Swirsky, who coached practice drills and the scrimmage game at the Advocate Center, the official training facility of the Chicago Bulls.
Participants were then invited to attend a banquet dinner and watch the Bulls take on the Boston Celtics at the United Center. During dinner, they also received a visit from Bulls legend Artis Gilmore, who signed autographs and took photos with those in attendance.
"Just like many basketball fans, the individuals with Down syndrome invited to this event were excited to be able to play on the same court where the Bulls practice all season long," said Dr. Brian Chicoine, medical director for the Adult Down Syndrome Center. "This is a great way to practice the health promotion activities we talk about at the Adult Down Syndrome Center."
Located on the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital campus in Park Ridge, Ill., the nationally recognized Adult Down Syndrome Center offers comprehensive, community-based care and services to teens and adults with Down syndrome. The clinic, founded in 1992, provides medical care, nutritional counseling, therapy, community advocacy, social activities and programs centered around health and wellness.
"Our multidisciplinary team strives to enhance the lives of people with Down syndrome every day," Dr. Chicoine said. "We're grateful for the 'Court of Dreams' event, which is not only a lot of fun, but also a unique opportunity for all of us."
