It's official: When Dairy Bar opens, spring is here in Glenview
Forget Saturday's rain, cold and occasional snow. The only forecast anybody cared about was the one predicted by the Glenview model: partly sundae, with a chance of ice cream cones and maybe a little slushy - because Dairy Bar was opening for the season.
For 32 years, the seasonal, family-owned business, located in a small red-and-white block building on Lehigh Avenue just west of Glenview Road in downtown Glenview, has been serving treats for its faithful customers.
For many people, when the Glenview Dairy Bar opens, spring has arrived.
"Every year my dad used to put boards up (at the end of the season) and people would say, when the boards came down, they knew that was the start of spring," said Luane Gabuzzi, who co-owns the business with her brother Chip Boedicker.
Their late parents, Chuck and Janelle Boedicker, purchased the business in 1991, and were the fourth owners. The business first opened in 1955.
"It's just fun to see customers who come back, and the people who want to be here on the first day," Gabuzzi said. "And just to see the kid's eyes light up and see the smiles for the ice cream, everybody is so friendly, it makes it fun."
Glenview Dairy bar will be open until mid-to-late October, depending on the weather, Gabuzzi said.
