Schaumburg seeking applicants for next Citizen Police Academy

Though capacity will remain limited, the Schaumburg Police Department's next Citizen Police Academy session beginning March 9 will be taking another step toward its pre-pandemic norm.

Due to lifting COVID-19 protocols, the spring session will be able to include an in-person visit to Northwest Central Dispatch, Schaumburg Crime Prevention Specialist Paula Diaz said. Only a virtual visit was possible during the last session in the fall.

The upcoming adult session runs for 10 weeks from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The classes consist not only of lectures, but also the opportunity to participate in firearms training and learn firsthand from mock traffic stops and room searches.

The police department's goals for the program include fostering stronger relationships with the community and having graduates partner with it in identifying problems and solutions to quality-of-life issues in the village.

Residents and members of Schaumburg businesses can submit an online application, available on the village's website, and attach a copy of their driver's license or state ID.

Participants must attend at least 75% of the sessions to graduate and be eligible for the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.

The department is not planning its next Youth Citizen Police Academy until the summer of 2023.
