Wheaton City Council reviewing Memorial Park summer events, parking

Wheaton City Council members will review the first full year of operations of the new band shell at Memorial Park during a planning session later this month.

Under the requirements of a special-use permit that authorized construction of the band shell, the city is conducting an evaluation of the activities at the entertainment and performing arts venue near downtown.

The planning session will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at city hall, 303 W. Wesley St. Remote participation will be available through Zoom.

Over the past year, the city and the Wheaton Park District gathered data on parking availability on surrounding streets, noise level measurements, event attendance and other information.

A newly renovated Memorial Park welcomed back audiences initially under COVID-19 restrictions in 2021 and without the full schedule of events expected by the park district, officials say. A total of 45 events, including a summer concert series, were held at Memorial Park last year.
