One person injured in Crystal Lake apartment fire

Crystal Lake Fire Department officials said one person suffered burns during a Sunday evening apartment fire that displaced 14 people.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze just before 6:15 p.m. by an automatic alarm from the apartment building on the 500 block of Darlington Lake, and then received a 911 call from the occupants of the apartment a minute later.

All occupants of the eight-unit building were able to escape before firefighters showed up. One unidentified resident of the unit that caught fire suffered burns attempting to extinguish the blaze and was transported to a nearby hospital. The resident's condition is unknown.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen of a first-floor unit of the two-story complex.

It took nearly 30 minutes for firefighters to extinguish the blaze they believe was caused by residents heating oil on the stove.

All eight units were deemed uninhabitable until cleaning and repairs can be made.

The American Red Cross and apartment management was assisting the 14 residents to find alternate housing.
