Fremd comes up big against Warren

Fremd's bigs came up large Tuesday in Palatine.

Caiden Suchy, Ryan Simmons and Archie Cox combined for 36 of Fremd's 56 points as the Vikings rolled past Warren 56-41 in a nonconference boys basketball game.

It was a solid win for Fremd (7-1) over a Warren team that had just one loss coming into the game.

"That was good example of a team victory," Fremd coach Bob Widlowski said. "Team defense, team offense and doing the little things. We were doing the little things like rebounding, taking charges and getting loose balls."

This was supposed to be a guard-oriented Fremd team with Eli Schoffstall and Chris Smyros leading the way for the Vikings. But on Tuesday, Suchy, Sammons and Cox showed that Fremd has a solid frontcourt as well.

"I liked the way they stepped up when Eli did not have his best game," Widlowski said. "They stepped up. Cox played fantastic and that was Suchy's best game so far. Simmons hit some timely baskets when we needed it."

Warren (7-2) had taken a 16-13 lead to open the second quarter.

Fremd then turned up the defensive pressure. The Vikings forced 7 turnovers, three of which came from taking charges - one each by Cox, Schoffstall and Smyros.

"We were willing to do things necessary to beat a good team," Widlowski said. "That helped turn the game around early for us."

Suchy also began to up his play for Fremd on the offensive end. He scored 8 of his 18 points in the second quarter as the Vikings eased ahead 25-21 at the break.

"I think all around we have gotten better since the first game" said Suchy, who also had 7 rebounds and a blocked shot. "We are more in shape and bring a lot of energy."

Fremd put then game away with a huge run to begin to second half.

The Vikings hit their first four shots from the field. They surged ahead 39-26 on Sammons' third 3-pointer of the game. Warren would never get closer than 9 from there.

"I think they were laying off me because I didn't score that much against Barrington," said Sammons, who would finish with 13 points,

"When they try to face guard someone on our team, anyone came step up and score big for us. All five starters can score in double digits for us. That's what makes us a good team."

Warren coach Jon Jasnoch said that Fremd's front line hurt his team.

"Fremd just out-executed us tonight," Jasnoch said. "They hit shot from a lot of places and we struggled with that. We were working hard on taking the guards out and then their bigs hurt us."

Jasnoch said the charges his team took also hurt his team.

"That is something we continue to work on and that is to play more under control and avoiding that," Jasnoch said. "It was a good learning game for us."

Andrew Dolan led Warren with 12 points, Adam Panek added 10 points while Cooper Stacey had 6 points,
