Mount Prospect police canine after it bit resident's dog
Mount Prospect is retiring its first police dog, Alex, after the canine bit a resident's dog, police announced in a news release Friday.
Alex escaped a squad car Nov. 3 after his handler, Officer Bryan Furr, made a traffic stop in the 500 block of Isabella Street. Furr saw Alex running toward a resident walking her dog but couldn't catch up. The resident's dog was bit in the rear leg and the abdomen, and Alex was bit in the ear.
The resident's dog was taken to an animal hospital, held overnight and is doing well, according to the release. The police department is covering all veterinary expenses.
Police are investigating how Alex escaped from the vehicle, which has been taken out of service.
Alex will live with Furr.
