Fire in Wood Dale leaves home uninhabitable

Four people escaped a house fire in Wood Dale late Tuesday afternoon without injury, but the blaze left the home uninhabitable, fire officials said.

Wood Dale Fire Protection District officials said firefighters were called to the home on the 500 block of West Irmen Drive just before 6 p.m. for reports of a fire inside the single-family, split-level house.

The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes of arrival. No injuries to firefighters were reported either.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but fire officials said it appears to have started in a bedroom.

The house was not equipped with working smoke detectors, fire officials said.

The residents of the house were assisted by the American Red Cross in finding alternative housing.
