Girls volleyball: Aurora Central Catholic sweeps St. Edward

Consistency.

That word aptly describes Aurora Central Catholic's 25-17, 25-19 victory over St. Edward in the Metro Suburban Conference opener for both teams in Elgin Tuesday night.

"We came out with high energy and that is our game," said ACC coach Michelle Chavez. "Our serving was very good, We got a little too comfortable in the second game but we got back to playing our game."

In Game 1, there were 5 lead changes early before the Chargers (4-3, 1-0) took control.

With the score tied at 10, ACC ripped off 7 straight points to take a 17-10 advantage. Contributing to the pivotal run for the Chargers were Chloe Ruge (2 kills, 2 aces), and Ashley Catich, Vianne Duarte and Abby Lester collected 1 kill each.

The Green Wave (2-1, 0-1) got to within 20-16 on a kill by Kailey Treiber but couldn't get any closer.

A kill by Duarte off a set by sophomore Sophia Kane gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead in the match.

In Game 2, ACC got off to a 10-5 lead courtesy of a kill by Ruge.

The Wave kept battling and got to within 16-15 on a kill by Delaney Lutzow.

The Chargers completed Game 2 and the match with a 9-4 run. An ace by Kane gave ACC the conference victory.

Duarte paced the winners with 7 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks.

"It was a good way to start the conference,' said Duarte. "Our serving has been good all year. We work well together and have good team chemistry. We want to go as far as we can this year."

Duarte got plenty of help from her teammates as Ruge collected 5 kills and 3 aces while Catich had 4 kills with 3 aces. Kane collected 5 assists with 2 aces for the Chargers.

The Wave were paced by Treiber with 6 kills and Maddie Pogorzelski collected 4 kills.

Brooke Biggins was the top server for the hosts with 4 aces.

"I like the way we started the season with wins over Harvest (Christian) and Elgin," said St. Edward coach Dawn Gross. "We hadn't beaten Harvest in 5 years and beating Elgin was a good win because they are a bigger school. Tonight, we missed too may serves and had too many unforced errors."
