Glenview Civic Awards moved to private gathering at Village Hall
Due to COVID concerns, the 54th Glenview Civic Awards has been moved to an invitation-only event at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 outdoors in the front plaza of Glenview Village Hall, 2500 E. Lake Ave.
The awards, an effort by village organizations and service clubs to recognize citizens who perform significant community service, had been planned as a public gala that day at the Renaissance Chicago Glenview Suites Hotel.
About a month ago, Civic Awards co-chair Karen Paszkiewicz said, surging COVID transmissions hastened the move to a scaled-down event due to distancing, an indoor mask mandate and the possibility of moving inside under inclement weather. COVID concerns canceled the 2020 Glenview Civic Awards, historically held in April.
On Sept. 10 at Village Hall, the awards' 2019 winners will be recognized: citizen of the year Cynthia "C.J." Sultz, youth of the year Wyatt Cummings, public safety recipient Glenview Police officer David Maize, and the special committee award for the Glenview Action Committee of Kerry Cummings, Charles Balling, David Raija and Gary Dubofsky.
Paszkiewicz said Village President Mike Jenny and trustees will be invited to honor the recipients. Also invited will be presidents of the Glenview Civic Awards roster of organizers and contributors: The Village of Glenview Service Club, American Legion Post 166, Glenbrook South High School, the Glenview Chamber of Commerce, the Navy League Glenview Council, Glenview Lions Club, Kiwanis Club of Glenview-Northbrook, Optimist Club of Glenview, Glenview Women's Club, Rotary Club of Glenview-Sunrise and Rotary-Luncheon.
The 2020 honorees were chosen for their work in combating the COVID pandemic. They include: NorthShore Glenview Hospital, Glenview Fire, Police and Dispatch, the Glenview Park District, Glenview Public Library and the Glenview Chamber of Commerce.
The Civic Awards will recognize those groups with a bench and plaque to be placed at Gallery Park, possibly dedicated by a ribbon cutting, Paszkiewicz said.
