Naperville man gets 12 years in prison for robbing local Arby's, Woodridge dry cleaners

A Naperville man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday for using a toy gun to rob an Arby's restaurant and Choice Dry Cleaners in 2017 and 2018.

DuPage County Judge Margaret O'Connell sentenced Ryan J. Dougherty, 31, of the 1900 block of Nutmeg Lane. Dougherty had pleaded guilty in February to the two counts of aggravated robbery.

According to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office, Dougherty had committed four other robberies. The release did not say where and when the robberies occurred. But court records indicate that in addition to Choice and Arby's, Dougherty has been ordered to pay restitution to Yorktown Cleaners, Signature Cleaners, Young Cleaners and Jet's Pizza.

The sentencing order did not say where the businesses are.

The Arby's in Naperville - which one of the two in the city wasn't specified - was robbed Dec. 3, 2017, and Choice Dry Cleaners, 3540 Seven Bridges Drive, Woodridge, was robbed Jan. 3, 2018. During both robberies, Dougherty showed workers a note that said he had a gun and showed them what appeared to be a butt of a gun.

He was arrested Jan. 12, 2018. Police say he had used a plastic gun that looked like a real one.

Dougherty received credit for the 3½ years he has been in the DuPage County jail since his arrest. He will have to serve at least 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
