Schaumburg breaks ground on 12-acre park at center of Motorola campus' rebirth

Schaumburg officials broke ground Wednesday on a park they see as a key feature of the former Motorola Solutions campus' rebirth, and a destination point for residents and visitors alike.

The 12-acre 90 North District Park, which some envision as a "Millennium Park for the suburbs," will feature a large outdoor performance venue, a sculpture garden, a dog park and a winter ice rink, among other amenities.

Located inside Veridian, the 225-acre redevelopment of the onetime corporate campus at Algonquin and Meacham roads, the park is being constructed in phases. The first phase is expected to cost a little more than $2 million and could be complete before the end of the year.

Other proposed amenities include a bicycling path, a hammock grove, water features and open lawn areas.

Among those joining Schaumburg leaders at the event Wednesday were Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, state Sen. Cristina Castro and Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison, as well as representatives of the business community, project supporters and potential investors.

The park would be the latest of several new developments already completed on the site or in the works. They include a Topgolf, a 260-unit row house development, the 260-unit Element at Veridian apartment building and the eight-story, 180,000-square-foot global headquarters of The Boler Co.

In March, it was announced that the sports-themed restaurant Sports & Social will be the entertainment anchor for The District at Veridian, a 30-acre area that's expected to serve as a "downtown" of the development with more than 150,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space.
