Glenview in 60 seconds

The rink rates

The renovation of the Glenview Community Ice Center, 1851 Landwehr Road, drew the attention of the online magazine Athletic Business in its June issue, dubbed its "2021 Architectural Showcase."

The Madison, Wisconsin-based publication listed 43 projects that tell "a story that is unique to the community to which it serves," Athletic Business editor Andy Berg wrote.

In its section devoted to public recreation, Athletic Business pointed out the design by Williams Architects of Itasca updated a building that is now "a state-of-the-art facility embracing a forward-thinking approach to architectural design and sustainability - both environmental and financial - thus reinventing the facility's identity within the community."

The magazine included six photographs of the Ice Center, including its new Great Hall and fireplace sculpture, dryland training area and community room and one of it two full-sized ice rinks decorated by translucent wall panels.

Congratulations

We're a little late on the draw here, but the winner of the Glenview Art League's 2021 Robert Sherman Fine Art Scholarship was Gretchen Bock, who just graduated from Glenbrook South. She's been accepted into the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Her wildly colorful and creative animated pieces earned a $1,000 award, an audience at an Art League board meeting, and a spot at the Art League's 2021 Summer Art Fair July 24-25.

Bearfootin'

The Kiwanis of Glenview/Northbrook continue their Bearfoot in the Park summer concert series on July 7 with The Wayouts. This quartet of garage-rockers plays 1960s classics from artists such as The Yardbirds, Buffalo Springfield and, if you're lucky this night, The Stooges.

Upcoming performances will come from Serendipity on July 14, and the Four C Notes on July 28 to conclude the series.

Bearfoot in the Park is offered for free from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Jackman Park Gazebo, 1930 Prairie St.

Police report of the week

At 6:19 p.m. on June 21, Northfield Police spoke with a resident on the 300 block of Linder Avenue. The person reported that several branches had been cut from a rose bush in their yard, and asked that the incident be documented.

Once in a lifetime

This will require planning and forethought: The Glenview Chamber of Commerce is hosting a trip to Vietnam on March 1-10, 2022. The group will be visiting places such as Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.

The cost per person is $2,499, based on shared occupancy, and includes airfare, taxes, hotels, cruise, meals, tours and entrance fees.

There will be an orientation meeting from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka. There is no obligation required to join the trip at that meeting. For details, reach Patricia Cohen via email at tricia@glenviewchamber.com.

Police report of the week II

At 7:23 p.m. on June 23, the resident on the 300 block of Linder Avenue told Northfield Police that more branches had been cut from their rose bush. Officers placed an extra watch on the residence.

Nice ride

Sgt. Joel Detloff of Glenview Police Department Community Relations represented the department at Rolling Meadows' Block Party on June 11, an evening in which people could come out and meet with police and fire personnel in a family-friendly atmosphere.

They closed down part of Rolling Meadows' Central Road, and part of the fun was a classic car show that also displays the police and fire vehicles. The event, a precursor to Rolling Meadows' National Night Out, drew thousands.

The assembled emergency vehicles were a hit. After votes were cast, Glenview's patrol car won for best squad car design, and Sgt. Detloff drove home with a first-place trophy.

Recycle right

A free program on do's and don'ts of curbside recycling, how to minimize waste and the "right" way to recycle will be presented in person in the Community Room East of the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road, from 1-2 p.m. July 9.

Mary Allen, recycling and education coordinator for the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, will discuss those topics and SWANCC resources and programs. To register for the recycling program, contact the library at (847) 729-7500.

Drug bottles

Drop off unused medications and sharps from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 in the Village Hall parking lot, 2500 E. Lake Ave., during the First Friday program. The next opportunity is Aug. 6. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs are accepted and should be left in their containers with personal information marked out. No controlled substances or over-the-counter liquid medications are accepted.

But, mercury-containing thermometers, thermostats and wall switches are accepted.
