The Fourth in Northbrook

The Northbrook Park District and Village of Northbrook are teaming up to offer a variety of activities for the Fourth of July weekend.

Starting as early as 7:30 a.m. with the Liberty Loop 5K (see below), July 3 will bring the band Night Baby to Village Green Park, Shermer and Meadow roads, from 3-5 p.m. At that same time, the Northbrook History Museum, 1776 Walters Ave., will reopen, celebrating the United States' 245th birthday, and its 45th.

From 7-9 p.m. there will be DJ music at the Velodrome at Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Ave., followed at around dusk, or 9 p.m., by a screening of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

Another DJ show arrives at the Velodrome from 7-9 p.m. July 4, followed around 9 p.m. by the village fireworks show at Meadowhill Park and Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road.

Other events come with a June 25 deadline, with registration at northbrook.il.us. They include a Fourth of July decorating contest for residents and businesses. Each entry will receive a decorating pack. Pictures of each display will be posted on the Village of Northbrook Facebook page for voting and prizes. Neighborhood bike parades on July 3-4 also come with party packs for those who register, and the village will drop off and pick up traffic control barricades, which are available for a maximum of two hours.

There also is a Northbrook Baseball Fourth of July tournament July 2-4. Visit northbrookbaseball.org for information.

The Liberty Loop

The Northbrook Park District presents its Liberty Loop 5K and Liberty Lap Fun Run on July 3 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road.

The Loop starts at 7:30 a.m. on a certified 5K course with medals awarded to top finishers. Participants will receive a T-shirt and gift bag. Children 5 and younger can participate for free, but must be registered.

Perhaps the better bet for youngsters ages 4-10 is the Liberty Lap, from 9-10 a.m. starting and ending at the Loop location but winding through Techny Park's Trail Through Time. Participants will receive a T-shirt, gift bag and miniature American flag.

There will be a post-race party including the awards ceremony, yoga and carnival games.

Registration for the Liberty Loop is $20 for kids 6-12 and $30 for those 13 and older. The Liberty Lap registration fee is $10. Online and in-person registration ends at 5 p.m. July 2. No day-of registration is available. To register online, visit nbparks.org.

Race packet pickup is available from 1-6 p.m. July 2 at Techny Prairie Activity Center, 180 Anets Drive in the Techny Prairie complex.

Liberty Loop sponsorship opportunities may be available. Contact Joan Scovic at (847) 897-6129 or jscovic@nbparks.org.
